Festival of Lights Begins Nov. 22

The winter holidays are approaching and Springfield is getting ready with plenty of activities planned for the annual Festival of Lights.

The six-week Festival of Lights starts with the Mayor’s Tree Lighting Ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 22 at Jordan Valley Park in downtown Springfield and is immediately followed by Cardinals’ Christmas & Fireworks next door at Hammons Field. Both events are free. Earlier in the day, free ice skating is available at Mediacom Ice Park.

After that, dozens of events are scheduled, including plays at Landers Theatre, Winterfest and other events at Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts, the 17th Annual Midtown Victorian Christmas Home Tour and much more.

For more information, call the Convention & Visitors Bureau at 800-678-8767 or check event dates on the calendar at www.springfieldmo.org.

Need a Little Help from Santa’s Helpers?

When it comes to finding the right gifts for everyone who was naughty or nice this year, Springfield retailers are a sure bet.

Whether it’s a unique hand-made glass bowl or the latest trendy sweater, stores large and small have what you’re looking for.

Battlefield Mall, featuring more than 150 stores, including Macy’s, is a good place to begin shopping.

Follow that with a visit to Eclectic Avenue, a collection of locally-owned shops and artists – Ampersand, Springfield Hot Glass, Global Fayre and Springfield Pottery – in the 300 block of South Campbell Avenue downtown.

Other local retailers that can help you fill the stockings include Askinosie Chocolate, Candy House Gourmet Chocolates, Countryside Cottage, Honey Heaven, Merry-Go-Round Stained Glass Center-Carousel Gift Shop, Rusty Moose Lodge Décor, Ted E. Bear’s Toy Factory, Waverly House Gifts & Gallery and dozens of others.

Take in a Flick at a Brand New Theater

Every time you turn around, there's something new happening in downtown Springfield.

The latest: Hollywood Theaters College Station Stadium 14 opened. The movie theater features 14 screens and the latest technology, and is a boon for the downtown entertainment district.

With more than 40 restaurants, nightclubs, boutiques, Mediacom Ice Park, Hammons Field baseball stadium and now the movie theater, downtown Springfield is a one-stop spot for entertainment!

Wonders of Wildlife Museum & Aquarium Announces Renovation Plans

Designers have traveled the world in recent months, visiting museums and aquariums to find the best exhibits.

Soon, their observations will be used to transform Wonders of Wildlife Museum & Aquarium into a world-class attraction.

Renovation plans include:

  • Adding several aquariums showcasing environments from around the world, walk-through aquariums and aquariums with pop-up tubes where kids can stand up inside.

  • Raising the roof by 20 feet and convert most of it to glass to allow more natural light into the building and to accommodate taller and live trees.

  • Adding a live butterfly exhibit area.

  •  Adding pools where patrons can touch or feed everything from stingrays to an octopus.

  • And more!

We’ll keep you posted as the reopening date approaches in early 2010.
